Watching foreign-language videos on your iPhone without understanding a word can be frustrating. You may pause the video repeatedly to understand the content. You may even look for subtitles and captions to help you make sense of the video.

This is where the in-built video and image translation options on iPhones help you. But how do you do it? What choices do iPhones offer for translation?

In this blog post, let's learn how to translate texts and videos on iOS devices and the options the OS has for its users.

Translating Text from a Video on iPhone

You can translate text from a video on an iPhone in two ways, and here is how:

Translate text from images

Here are the steps you must follow to translate text on an iPhone from images:

  1. Access the Translate app on your iPhone and tap Camera.
  2. Choose the language you want to translate text on the image.
  3. Point your camera to the image you want to translate the text on and wait till the live text button appears on the screen. You can also do the same with existing photos in your photo library.
  4. To translate text on an image you captured, load the photo from the Photos app.
  5. The app will automatically detect the language of the text on the image.
  6. Tap the translate option to translate the text on the image and display it as an overlaid translation.

Your iPhone also lets you listen to the text on the translated image by clicking the blue play button.

Translate text from videos

You can also translate text from videos directly on your iPhone. To make this work ensure your iOS is upgraded to iOS 15 or higher.

Here is what you can do:

  1. Open your Camera app and record the video by shooting the text you want to translate. You can also download the video and keep it in your Photos app to access it for translation.
  2. Now, open the video and play it from the Phone app. Pause the video with the text that you want to translate.
  3. Press the text you want to translate and hold it to select the rest of the text.
  4. After selection, Tap the live text feature and choose the Translate option from the menu.
  5. Now, choose the language you want to translate text into and tap translate.

To ensure that this feature works without an internet connection, you can download the languages you want to translate. When you translate text from an image or video in an area with weak reception, tap downloaded languages and choose the language you want for translation from a list of languages.

Currently, the Translate app supports offline translation in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, and more for  iOS 15 and higher.
